The Truth about Stacey (Babysitters Club)

The Truth about Stacey (Babysitters Club)
by Ann Martin; illustrated by Raina Telgemeier

Genre: Realistic Fiction, Graphic Novels
Where to find this book: Winship School Library

What is the main idea?
The main idea of this story is that there are these girls who babysit and are good at it. Then these girls come who can’t even babysit. The kids told the good babysitters everything that happened and how they didn’t care about the kids. They just wanted to watch TV and smoke with their boyfriends. One of the bad babysitters says to one of the girls she babysits for that she just wants the money.

What did you like about this book?
I did not like that the bad girls don't care about the kids they babysit. I do not like that because that is not nice and that is not the right thing. You don’t say to a kid, "I don’t care about you. I just want the money." The girls finally notice at the end what they are doing is wrong.

Riding Freedom

Riding Freedom
by Pam Munoz Ryan

Genre: Historical Fiction
Where to find this book: Boston Public Library

What is the main idea?
The main idea of this book is about this girl named Charlotte. She isn’t like other kids or girls. She was already strong when she was born, she survived a lot of fevers, she walked before some babies crawled, she talked before some babies, and she never cried unless someone took something away from her. When she was 2 her parents took her for a ride with the horses. Her parents thought she was scared but she actually wasn’t. When a crack of lightning lit, the horses went crazy and the wagon tumbled down a steep hill and Charlotte was thrown out of the wagon and landed on a bed of grass. The horses kept her warm. After that she was kept in the orphanage with all boys. She didn’t act like girls she acted like a boy. Her friend was Hayward. He talked a lot. Eventually he was adopted and Charlotte gave him half of her leather bracelet that her mom had given her. Charlotte loved horses and Vern was the horse stable guy. They were friends as well. Charlotte escaped from the orphanage and dressed as a boy. She found a stable for boys and joined. The stable guy was Ebenezer. At the end she lost one of her eyes and only uses one eye now because a horse kicked her in the eye. She covers it with a eye patch. When she got the money she bought her own house in California and Hayward visited.

What did you like about this book?
I liked this book because of this girl named Charlotte. She dressed like a boy mostly her whole life. Also she lived in a orphanage and escaped. She was not scared and she lived with having to use only one eye. I think this was an awesome book.

It's about a girl and a boy named Margo [girl] and Q [boy]. One day he was sleeping and she just climbed into his window to borrow his car to do 11 things for the night. Then he let her but he came with her. They did the 11 things, then she disappeared one night. He tried to look for her.

What did you like about this book?
In my opinion this book is awesome because it gets interesting and then more interesting. He tries to find her any place she likes. He likes her now and when he was small too. She leaves hints about where she is. He finds the clues, then he finds her. Then they start liking each other.

Matilda

Matilda
by Roald Dahl

Genre: Humor
Where to find this book: Boston Public Library

What is the main idea?
This book is about this girl named Matilda that was very intelligent and loved to learn. Her parents and brother would rather watch TV. She wanted to go to school and she finally got to go. Her teacher was Miss Honey. Miss Honey is very kind and she believes in Matilda because she is intelligent. The Trunchbull is the headmistress of the school. She carries a stick making her look very scary to the kids. The scariest thing about her is that she throws kids out the window and when kids are bad she puts them in a closet called the chokey. She can put them in there for the whole day. The closet has nails sticking on the door and it’s very dark inside.

What did you like about this book?
I like this book because the weirdest thing in this book was that on page 144 The Trunchbull went into Miss Honey’s class and asked all the kids to put their hands straight in front of them because she wanted to see if their hands were clean on both sides of their hands. Then a boy named Nigel's hands were dirty and the Trunchbull said “ you are disgusting” and then she said “I don’t wish to see you anymore of you today! Go stand in the corner on one leg with your face to the wall!” Then she said “Don’t argue with me, boy or I’ll make you stand on your head.” Then she started to testing him on his spelling.

Natalie recommends this book for people that hates school because they have better schools than Matilda’s school!
